Have Neck Pain?

Many people suffer from neck pain. Sometimes neck pain is infrequent and caused by sprains or strains from an activity of daily life; but when it becomes constant and chronic and impedes your everyday life, then there is a high probability of an underlying more serious issue.

If you have only recently started to have neck pain, please see your doctor. If you have had pain for a significant time and have already tried a variety of treatments with little or no success, please read on as we address symptoms, causes, tests and possible surgery for some different types of neck pain.

Your Neck and Spine

Your spinal column which runs from your skull to the pelvis is made up of 33 bones or vertebrae and as described is divided into five sections. Starting at the top they are the cervical spine made up of 7 vertebrae, which is known as your neck. The thoracic spine or chest area containing 12 vertebrae. Lumbar spine or low back made up of 5 vertebrae. Sacrum or pelvis area with 5 vertebrae and then the coccyx or tailbone.

Your spine is quite a complex structure and in addition to these bones there are various joints, discs and nerves. Along with this you have muscles, ligaments, tendons, blood vessels. The vertebrae in your neck are labeled starting from the top as C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C7. The C denoting cervical spine.

We will confine most of our information to the cervical spine or neck area and information about neck pain but most of it can apply to other areas of the spine.
